Please note that existing postgraduate research students cannot be considered for this funding.

3.5 years full-time or 7 years part-time.

A number of awards are available on a competitive basis.

You must meet the academic requirements of your programme. For most in the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, this is:

• Bachelor's (Honours) degree at 2:1 or above (or overseas equivalent); and 
• Master's degree in a relevant subject - with an overall average of 65% or above, a minimum mark of 65% in your dissertation and no mark below 55% (or overseas equivalent)

For consideration for a School of Arts, Languages and Cultures PhD Studentship, you must submit an application for one or both of the following competitions:

AHRC North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP) PhD Studentships 2025 Entry

ESRC North West Social Science DTP (NWSSDTP) PhD Studentships 2025 Entry

You must submit your completed online application for a place on your chosen Postgraduate Research programme by  13 January 2025. This is to ensure you hold an offer of a place by the time the school committee make their selection.

To enter the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures PhD Studentship competition, you must submit an application for one or both of the following competitions:

AHRC North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP)

ESRC North West Social Science DTP (NWSSDTP)

Your School of Arts, Languages and Cultures Studentship application will be considered based on your programme application; supporting documents; and your NWCDTP or NWSSDTP application.

Your full online application must include:

• A 1,500 word  . Please state the word count on page 1 of the document.
• A copy of your Bachelor's and Master's academic transcript and certificate. If your Master's degree is pending, please provide an interim transcript.
• An up-to-date academic CV summarising your academic record, employment history, publications and highlighting experience demonstrating your research potential.
• The names of two academic referees, including one from your most recent institution. Your referees will be contacted directly via the Referee Portal following the submission of your application form.
• A certificate or evidence demonstrating your English language ability and proficiency.

• Academic merit and preparedness for research
• Quality and feasibility of research proposal
• Consideration of ethical responsibility

School of School of Arts, Languages and Cultures Postgraduate Research Committee (PGRC)

Your complete online application for your preferred PhD programme must be submitted by  13 January 2025 .

You must submit your research council funding application by the given deadlines:

AHRC North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP): 5pm GMT, 3 February 2025.

ESRC North West Social Science DTP (NWSSDTP) PhD Studentships: 5pm GMT, 2 February 2025.

Please note that these are strict deadlines and late or incomplete applications will not be included in the competition.

We expect to communicate the outcome to applicants by 30 May 2025.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide feedback on individual applications, as outcomes are determined by independent panels.

Offers of funding are not deferrable. If you cannot start your programme by the date mentioned in your studentship offer letter, the award will be withdrawn. You are permitted to re-apply in future.
